5G Non-Standalone (NSA) is based on the 4G core network, while 5G Standalone (SA) is a complete evolution to meet the increasing needs

Get access to enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (uRLLC) and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) for IoT

5G Context

5G is currently being introduced on the market as 5G NSA, while carriers and operators are working on 5G SA. With this next evolution, operators will be able to offer new use cases that require either ultra-low latency, very high reliability and/or massive Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.
5G NSA continues to use the Diameter protocol in the core network like 4G, while 5G SA introduces a new Service-Based Architecture (SBA) that adopts the HTTP/2 over TLS protocol for communication between different network functions.

5G Non-Standalone

The 5G network is expanding rapidly as it is an effective solution to the emerging business needs that the LTE network cannot support: speed upgrades, lower latency, higher capacity, and increased bandwidth.

Early adopters launched commercial 5G services by leveraging their existing 4G radio network infrastructure with the introduction of 5G New Radio (NR), the so called 5G Non-Standalone (NSA).

5G Standalone

5G Standalone (SA) is the next step that includes the introduction of a new 5G core network to connect the 5G New Radio (NR).
To launch 5G SA Roaming carriers need to implement a 5G signaling offer to transport HTTP/2 over TLS messages between Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
The 5G SA offer is based on centralized equipment located in carrier network.
5G signaling is a service for MNOs to support roaming on the 5G network for their retail and visitor customers.
It is essentially a transport solution with specific features for signaling.
Specifically, we will be using the new SEPP equipment - that has been designed to handle HTTP/2 over TLS messages – meaning that we can provide both "Proxy HTTP" and "Hosted SEPP" functions.

5G Non-Standalone uses the 4G Evolved Packet Core (EPC).

To be ready to launch 5G NSA, operators need:

  • The acquisition of 5G licenses
  • The deployment of the new 5G radio
  • The upgrades necessary to the core network to support the 5G NSA

5g roaming schéma 2

The 5G Standalone (SA) enable operators to offer enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (uRLLC) and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC).
5G SA will be key to the development of innovative services, improving voice and data roaming.

5G SA will cover new technologies like Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Network Slicing, HTTPS proxies, Regional P-Gateways and more.

To be ready to launch 5G SA operators need:

  • The acquisition of 5G licenses
  • The deployment of new 5G radio and new 5G core (necessary for 5G slicing)

5G NSA Roaming

5G NSA Roaming 1

Roaming is straightforward and works perfectly on the existing infrastructure.
Your 5G NSA traffic will be managed by Orange Wholesale International Transport and Signaling services over the existing 4G/LTE network.

You can easily offer 5G NSA roaming, with a few simple actions, as defined by the GSMA decision:

  • You just need an LTE launch letter according to BA50 v11.4 (Annex Y) - No need to sign a new roaming agreement
  • A new IREG test must be performed between operators

5G SA Roaming

Hosted SEPP

5G SA roaming needs a new infrastructure with the following requirements:

  • To manage new 5G signaling protocol (http/2 over TLS)
  • To deploy Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP)
  • To implement Service Communication Proxy (SCP)
  • To support Binding Support Function (BSF)

To support you to launch 5G SA Roaming, Orange Wholesale International completes its portfolio with a 5G Signaling offer to transport http messages between MNOs, based on centralized equipment located within our network.

To offer 5G SA roaming to your end users you will need:

  • To have a 5G SA carrier
  • To have a new 5G Signaling protocol management
  • To Sign new 5G SA roaming agreements
  • To perform new 5G SA roaming tests
